The Biggest Baby Shower

17 Nov

big City Moms collage

I remember the day I found out I was pregnant with my first.  It was an exciting time but as I got closer to my due date I started getting nervous.  Shopping was definitely fun but I had no idea what I was going to need or where to begin with my registry.  What do I NEED that will keep my baby safe, healthy, and will help her meet developmental milestones?  I was the first of my friends to get pregnant and I was new to New York so I was clueless about where to shop and what to shop for.

I recently attended The Big City Moms Biggest Baby Shower for the first time.  I wish I had known about this event when I was pregnant with my girls.  On November 13, new and expecting parents gathered at the Metropolitan Pavilion to learn about the latest baby gear, clothing, feeding and services available for a smooth transition to parenthood.  Various brands and representatives were available to educate parents on safety and choosing what’s right for you.  New and expecting parents had the best for baby (and parents) all in one room.  I have to say a lot has changed since my first pregnancy (5 1/2 years ago) and even my second (4 years ago).  I can’t believe how much is out there. Below you can find a little of what parents experienced and saw at the Biggest Baby Shower:

Get Strolling:

Choosing a stroller is challenging.  There are so many things to think about.  Had I known that I was going to have my second so soon, I would have opted for a stroller that could transform to a double and have a wheel board.  I also wish I had pushed a few around before.  Attendees were able to talk to various stroller brand experts to learn the latest features and give strollers a test drive to decide what best suites their new family.  Representatives from Orbit, Joovy, UppaBaby, Mama’s and Papas, Quinny, Britax, and Baby Jogger were in attendance.  So what’s new? Early next year you will be able to design your own stroller on Orbit.com.  A black frame and more fabric color choices will be available.  The Joovy TooQool is a new double stroller with a bumprider board that can be attached (love this stroller).  Also, new to Joovy is the Caboose VaryLight, in stores soon.

Time to Eat:

Mixie is an awesome bottle, making feeding on the go easier.  Two compartments separate the formula and water. When ready to feed your baby, push a button to dispense formula, then mix.

Liza from SageSpoonfuls was demonstrating how to make baby food with the SageSpoonfuls Immersion Blender and Food Processor.  Glass jars for storing baby food will be available soon!

A Fashionable Mom and Baby:

Lucky Brand was a favorite when I had my first.  At one point they stopped their baby and kid line.  I was happy to learn at the Biggest Baby Shower that baby and kid clothes are available online and in stores again.   You’ll also want to shop Ruum for your new baby.  The clothes are adorable!

Keep it Separate:

I’ve never like packing dirty clothes with clean clothes.  Especially, when my girls were infants and going through multiple outfits a day.  I would go through so many ziplock bags to keep the clothes separate.  Free Like Birdie offers green products to keep your clothes organized and separate without being wasteful.  Great for traveling or diaper bags.

In addition to shopping and testing out new products, new parents attended seminars (click for topics discussed and a list of speakers).

At the end of the night, parents left with an amazing gift bag stuffed with the products below.  Some also walked away with fabulous prizes!

20130305-213906.jpgNot long ago I attended an event with Momtrends to introduce two strollers new to the market by Stokke . Most moms are familiar with the Stokke Xplory because of its unique look and height. Now in their line up of strollers is the Stokke Crusi, a multiconnection stroller that can be used as a single or double and the Stokke Scoot, a compact stroller. At the end of the event, I strolled out with the new Stokke Scoot for the purpose of this review (below). For a full recap of the event from Momtrends, click here.

Living in New York City, your stroller is your main set of wheels and your main accessory.   Finding a stroller that is easy to maneuver, put into a taxi, and looks great all at the same time is hard to find. When I started my stroller search, before my first, I had not heard of Stokke. The only stroller I had really seen or heard of was the Bugaboo. Since then I have gone through multiple brands of strollers trying to find the one that was ideal for my family and one that could be my main set of wheels and looks great. The Stokke Scoot is ideal for a baby or small toddler who does not have siblings or the older sibling is able to walk.  It has been perfect for our family because my oldest is rarely in the stroller since she is in school all day and is also old enough to walk.  Most days, it is just me and my youngest running errands in the Stokke Scoot so there is no need for a large double or big stroller.  Some of the features I love about the stroller:

  • Higher hight position to make child closer to interact when rear acing and exploring the world when facing front
  • A one-handed folding system, by far the easiest fold of all the strollers I have tried.
  • It is light weight, 22 lbs, and easy to carry or put into a taxi for city moms and cars for suburban moms on the go.  Also, ideal for families who travel frequently.
  • The under basket is big and is perfect for carrying groceries home or storing backpacks for school.
  • The tires don’t require a pump, my last stroller had air-filled tires that were always deflating and puncturing.
  • The cup holder is perfect for my morning coffee or water for my daughter.  Hoping an extra cup/ snack holder will be available in the future to place into the parasol opening.
  • Available in 7 fabulous colors, black melange is pictured.
  • My favorite is that the stroller can be pushed up to a table at a park, restaurant or caffè  and function as a high chair for a quick snack or a meal out with the family.

What you should know before buying:

  • Although the seat looks small, my daughter always seems comfortable and asks to ride in “her” stroller every morning.
  • Only two recline positions: upright/active or laying back/ rest.
  • Suitable from birth to up to 33 lbs
  • It is difficult getting up onto sidewalks when the child is faced toward you and there is no ramp.

The Stokke Scoot is available now and retails for $699.99! Click the link for a full demonstration.  Happy SCOOTing!

Ride In Style: Quinny Maxi-Cosi Collection by Britto

31 Aug

Searching for the perfect stroller is a never-ending battle, especially when you live in a city where your stroller is your car.  Four years ago I began my stroller search.  I have gone through four brands  from a single, to a double, to an umbrella, and then finally back to a single with the best wheel board but none have looked as beautiful and stylish as the new Quinny moodd by Britto.  (more below image)

On August 23, Quinny and Maxi-Cosi launched their new collection with Romero Britto at his gallery in Miami.  If you don’t recognize his name, you will surely recognize his art work as it has been exhibited in galleries and museums in over 100 countries, including the Salon Nationale des Beaux-Arts exhibition at the Carrousel du Louvre in 2008 and 2010. In a press release about the new line Romero said “Through my art I hope to inspire warmth, creativity and happiness. The Quinny and Maxi-Cosi brands are a perfect marriage to further spread optimism and happiness reaching even the youngest children.” When I asked my four-year-old daughter what she liked about the stroller she said she “loved the rainbow stroller because it has lots of colors”.  What’s not to love about the aesthetically pleasing colors and the adorable heart on the sunshade. (more below images)

To ride (or push) in style, the Britto Collection will be sold at Ideal Baby first from September- October and then at other Specialty Baby Retailers nationwide.  The Quinny moodd by Britto retails for $799.99 and is available in red, blue and black. The Maxi-Cosi Mico Infant Seat by Britto retails for $249.99 and is available in red.  The Britto Collection also includes accessories: a parasol ($49.99) and sunshade ($29.99).
