Cruising in the Joovy Caboose VaryLight {Review}

Choosing the right stroller is important, especially living in NYC (or any city). Strollers are like cars, it’s the main transportation to and from school, running errands, shopping, and getting place to place, especially when running late.  The type of stroller you need change as children get older and as your family grows.  I had a single stroller with a wheel board, however, I often found my girls fighting over who is going to sit in the seat.  After a long day of Kindergarten, my 5-year-old would want to sit on our way to afterschool activities while my 3 year-old fell asleep or sat because she couldn’t walk as far.

In expanded position.

I recently received the newest Joovy Caboose, The VaryLight, to review.  It is perfect for older children.  The name VaryLight comes from its ability to expand and contract for varying needs.  If my oldest is tired and wants to sit, I expand it giving a lot more room to sit on the back bench.  The stroller has a 3-position recline in the front seat.  When my youngest falls asleep in the front seat, my oldest sitting in the back, still has room with the seat slightly reclined.

The swivel front wheels make it easy to navigate when in the compacted position (43.5 inches long).  When the stroller is expanded it does takes up a bit of room (49.75 inches long). In a matter of minutes, it can easily  go back to the compact position by unclipping the clips on both sides, pulling the lever under the front seat and sliding the frame towards you, making navigating and storage easier.  There are green markers to let you know when both positions (extended and compacted) are in the correct place. There is also a built-in platform to stand on that makes hopping on and off easy for the days either of my girls want to walk.

I love to walk all over the city, however, there are the times that I need to jump in a cab with my girls and the stroller.  I love that the VaryLight folds up easily and everything folds together, with one hand.  Simply pull the lever on the handle bar up, push in and  then push forward as the frame collapses (see images below).  No messing with wheel boards to take them off or move seats around. Folded, the stroller is long, so I made sure to look for an SUV taxi with a large trunk.  It fit in with no problem.  I have not tried the trunk of a regular taxi.  My parents just moved to South Carolina and I know there will be many times I will be navigating through an airport alone.  The Caboose VaryLight to get to the gate and fold quickly to board the plane.

My girls love using their umbrellas.  They both were able to use an umbrella while sitting, NYC winters can get extremely windy and cold so there are often days they can’t use them.  The rain comer is all one piece and fits over both children easily (we used it when the stroller is contracted and there was plenty of room for both girls underneath).  There are two windows, one up front and one on the rear side to make handing drinks and snacks easy.  The girls loved popping their heads out to say hi. In addition to protecting them from the rain, it also protects them from the wind and keeps them warm.

The versitility of the VaryLight is amazing.  For the growing family a car seat adapter attaches to the front or rear of the stroller for the newest addition.

Back-to-School with Justin Boots for Kids

When I shop for footwear for back-to-school, I like to buy things that are versatile and can be worn with most of their outfits. I love cowgirl boots because they can be worn with jeans (tucked in or out), skirts, shorts or dresses. My oldest daughter loves cowgirl boots.  She received her first pair when she was two and insisted on wearing them everyday, even when she outgrew them.   When she received a pair of Justin Boots, she was ecstatic and decided she was going to wear them for the first day of Kindergarten. More after image…

A few ways my oldest likes to wear her boots! She was a little disappointed to learn her little sister has caught up and wears the same size!

Justin Boots for Kids come in many gorgeous styles for both boys and girls.  I chose the Justin® Kids Tan Puma Snip Toe Western Boots (pictured above) for my oldest daughter because the design is subtle, beautiful, and they can go with just about everything.   The Puma Snip Toe Western Boots are made of soft leather and feature a patented J-Flex Flexible Comfort System® helps make Justin Boots the most comfortable boots you’ll ever own!   My daughter is very sensitive to touch and is very particular about how things fit.  She was able to walk in her boots with ease and told me they were very comfortable for her when she walked.  She absolutely LOVES the cowgirl heel. I could not stop smiling when she jumped up and down saying “Mom, wow, I can’t believe I have heels on”.  The pull strap makes the boots easy to put on but my daughter had a little difficulty taking them off.  Both of my girls measure around an 11 and the size 11 boot fit them great.  I love the boots so much I am going to order another style, Justin®Children’s Bay Westerner w/ Saddle Vamp in Pink Cowhide (pictured below), for my youngest!

Balance Bar mini energy bars (Review & GIVEAWAY)

18 Aug

20130818-002843.jpg

It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over and my girls head back to school in a few weeks! Heading back-to-school means packing lunches and snacks for dance, soccer practice, play-dates and “snack week” responsibilities. I have tried to think of filling snacks that they will enjoy. I recently tried the Balance Bar mini energy bars which contain 7 grams of protein, 100 calories and 23 vitamins and minerals. The bars are soft, flavorful, satisfying, filling and easy to eat. They are the perfect size for kids or even parents who need a little something to hold them over while on-the-go. A bite of the cookie dough reminded me of the days I used to sneak bites of raw cookie dough while baking with my mom..yumm. The double chocolate is just as delicious for all the chocolate lovers out there. Unfortunately my oldest didn’t try them because they are produced on equipment that also processes peanuts, tree nuts, egg, wheat and sesame but my youngest is so excited to pack them in her Itzy Ritzy snack bag (to be featured in an upcoming food storage post).

Are you ready for back-to-school? Balance Bar® in partnership with the Macaroni Kid parent network surveyed more than 5,000 parents of schoolaged children and found that 61% of parents thought that Fall (aka Back to School) is the busiest time of year for their families.

What else did they find from this survey? Check it out:

• 77% of parents said they have 3 or more activities/events per week on average once school starts.

• 80% of respondents said once school starts, they will be planning more meals and attending more sporting events for their kids.

• And 57% of parents said they try to have one meal together each day as a family to help balance their schedules.

• 79% of parents reported that they pack their kids’ school lunches.

To help parents, Macaroni Kid provided some tips on how to better prepare for a school day and balance everyone’s schedules:

• Do a run through. Are your kids starting a new school or a new routine? Do a run through. Wake up “school time,” brush teeth, get dressed, pack lunch, have a schoolappropriate breakfast and maybe even drive or walk to school. Then, take those packed lunches and head to the park for a final summer break picnic.

• Plan the menus. Give your kids several options in each category and let them weigh in on what they’d like to find in their lunch boxes… you won’t have to guess each morning and they are far more likely to eat it if they’ve had a hand in selecting it. We love Balance Bar® minis to pack along for snacks!

• Clean your closets! Nothing gets you and the kids ready for smooth mornings like purged, well-organized closets.

• Start a good sleep routine early. Kids love to stay up late in the summer time (and who can blame them) but it makes for tougher mornings if kids are used to going to bed later and sleeping in past “school time” wake up.

• Set goals with your children for the upcoming school year. Whether it’s academics, sports, or extracurricular activities it’s great to help kids get motivated for success in the new school year.

Mom Made Foods: Making Meal Time Easier {Review and Giveaway}

7 Jun

Last week was a pretty hectic week.  We went away for Memorial Day and when I got back I was rushing to get the class gift together for the last day of school and running around getting ready for my friend’s wedding which was Saturday.  The girls were staying the weekend with my mom so I also had a lot of grocery shopping to do. I usually just go to Whole Foods daily so I needed to make sure I had enough food for my mom and the girls so she wouldn’t have to go out. It was such a busy week preparing for the weekend and catching up from being away, easy meals were the way to go.  I stocked the freezer with Mom Made Foods and made sure to have plenty of pasta, sandwich meat, and anything easy to prepare.  The favorite for the girls was the Mom Made Meals Spaghetti and Meatballs.  My girls love it so much, Pela had to carry the box through Whole Foods one day and ate it as soon as we got home.  The girls have tried the Mom Made Mac & Cheese, Turkey Meatball Bites, Bean Burrito Munchie and Cheese Pizza Munchie and have enjoyed them all.  Mom Made Foods are perfect for when you are getting ready to go away and don’t have time to make a meal.  Mom Made Meals are quick and delicious-my husband has been known to eat the Spaghetti and Meatball on nights we don’t cook.  Click to find Mom Made Foods near you.

Comes with 4 bite size meatballs. I like serving in our Oogaa bowls to make re-heating easy if the girls don’t finish it all.
