Rainy Day, DIY Hair Clips for Halloween

IMG_7759Last Halloween, I didn’t have anything festive to wear for the school’s Halloween bake sale and dance.  We had foam Halloween themed stickers everywhere from various art projects.  I also had a couple of sectioning clips laying around.  I quickly grabbed some glue and put something together.  It turned out much better than I anticipated and my girls were fighting over who was going to wear it.

When I was going through my Halloween stickers to pull out for crafts, I stumbled upon the clip I made last year.  My girls saw it and immediately asked to have a clip making play date with friends.  I went to the local hair supply store and purchased more clips.  I found an 80 pack, because we can make clips for all the other upcoming Holidays with the leftovers.  You can also make a bunch to give to friends or hand out as an allergy friendly treat alternative.  My older daughter had a clip making play date yesterday.  Today we continued the fun and made more- the perfect activity for the cold and rainy day we had.

Here is how to make them (you can find most of the supplies at Michaels if you don’t already have them).

Supplies needed:

  • Glue gun (for adult use, I used this for our clips this year).  You can also use heavy duty craft glue
  • Double prong clips
  • Creatology foam stickers and any other halloween stickers you may have.
  • Glitter Glue
  • Paint Brush

Directions:

  1. Glue your starting shape or sticker onto the clip (Shapes aren’t necessary but we used scraps from our Creatology Haunted House we put together earlier on in the week as a base to add more than one sticker)
  2. Glue on any additional stickers or designs you would like.
  3. Use a paint brush and add some glitter glue for some extra shine.
  4. Let dry then show off your Halloween Hair.
  5. For a little extra, we hung our clip designs on the Creatology Halloween Boo sign we made (pictured above).

Spooky Snacks & Crafts For Halloween

My girls couldn’t be more excited for Halloween.  This year we were unable to get our decorations from where we store them so we have been busy making our own to decorate the house.  While we decorate it’s always fun to have Halloween Themed snacks (these could also be a fun afternoon craft activity with food).  Below are some of the activities we have done together and snacks you can make for your halloween play dates, parties or bake sales:

Spider Hands with Web: A simple activity you can do with almost anything you have in your house.  Have your child trace both hands on black construction paper or use computer paper and have them color in their hands after traced.  Cut out hands and glue together.  Have your child make the eyes or you can use google eyes if you have any available.  On a piece of white paper, draw a web and then cut it out. Hang somewhere around the house.

Creatology Foam Pumpkin Kit:  This kit is available at Michaels.  It’s perfect for making signs and Halloween pictures to hang around the house.  It comes with foam stickers for eyes, ears, nose, black cats, and spiders as well as google eyes to glue on.   We also made a Halloween mobile out of them by punching holes in the stems and hanging them from a hanger.  (use can also punch holes in the hand spiders mentioned above and hang them as well on the mobile).

The Sparkly Pumpkin:  The easiest craft to keep busy.  All you need is miniture pumpkins and crayola glitter glue. To give it a little spooky touch, add rubber rats or spiders.  A great decoration for around the house.

GoGoSqueez-enstein: I made these for a snack when my girls came home from school one day.  I made one on the computer and the other I made with construction paper, glitter glue and a black marker.  My oldest thought they were so cute, she went and made a bunch to bring to her friends Halloween party.

There Was A Little Girl Who Swallowed A Spider:  My girls love the series There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed….A Fly, A Bat and so on.  The other day I made these snacks for a Halloween craft play date.  We started joking around about The Little Girls Who Swallowed a Spider.  These snacks are simple to make.  All you need are brownie bites from Whole Foods (note that they are made in a facility that also processes peanuts and tree nuts).  UTZ Halloween Pretzels, edible Eyes, and Wilton Gel Writers.  Break the wings off the pretzel bats and push them into the Brownie to make the legs,

Trick-Or-Treat For UNICEF

Last night the girls and I headed to Dylan’s Candy Bar to join The Moms and Laura Marano, actress and star of the Disney Channel series Austin and Ally.  The event was held to educate and highlight the 2013 Trick-or-Treat For UNICEF campaign!  I was excited for my girls to learn about Trick-or-Treat For UNICEF because they will be the third generation in my family helping save lives.

For those unfamiliar, The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) works in more than 190 countries and territories to save and improve children’s lives, providing health care and immunizations, clean water and sanitation, nutrition, education, emergency relief, and more.  The U.S. Fund for UNICEF supports UNICEF’s work through fundraising, advocacy, and education in the United States.  Together, we are working toward the day when ZERO children die from preventable causes and every child has a safe and healthy childhood.

Trick-or-Treat For UNICEF began in 1950 by a family collecting change at Halloween for children left vulnerable from World War II. Sixty-three years later, children continue to raise millions to help other children around the world.  No matter how big or small the donation, every penny counts.   How you can help:

The Trick-or-Treat School Challenge for Teachers:  Beginning October 1st through January 31,2013, K-6 teachers can submit a video or another form of creative visual media, demonstrating how their students are helping kids around the world through their efforts surrounding Trick-or-Treat For UNICEF.  Resources, lesson plans, and things to do with the class are available on the Trick-or-Treat For UNICEF website to help get started!

Families:  If your school isn’t participating in the Challenge, your family can help by downloading everything you need.  After Halloween, send your money and donation form to: Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, 125 Maiden Lane, New York, New York 10038

Clubs and Groups : Get your soccer team, cub scout den or girl scout troop to help too!

A Halloween Birthday Bash For Daddy

Yesterday was my husbands birthday. Since Halloween is next week, my oldest daughter wanted to have a Halloween themed party for my husband and his twin brother.  My daughter placed paper balloons she decorated around the apartment.  We baked cupcakes and she insisted we have “twin” Jack-o-lantern cakes for my husband and brother-in-law.  I started thinking about how I could create this idea for her with what we had at home. This is what we came up with:

I don’t have a round cake pan and I only had 1 box of cake mix.  I realized that our Oogga bowls are oven safe and the perfect size for personal size cakes. See my past Oogaa post.  We made the cake mix according to the package and then filled the two bowls.  We used the remaining mix to make twelve cupcakes for the guests.  I added green food coloring to the end of the batter to make one green cupcake for the stem (do not ice this cupcake when done baking).

We only had a container of hot pink funfetti icing. We put a little pink icing to the side because both of my girls wanted a pink cupcake and started talking about how we could turn it orange.   My daughter did a color mixing unit at school last year and she pipped up, “we can mix yellow and red to make orange”.   I pulled out the food coloring and we started with yellow.  As we were mixing, it turned bright orange and she realized we didn’t need red.

Once the cakes and cupcakes were done baking, we started icing.  After we  finished icing both cakes, we cut the green cupcake in half and cut one end off.  We added it to the top of the cake.  We always keep chocolate chips handy because my oldest loves them. We decided they would be good to use for the eyes and mouth of the jack-o-lantern.  She insisted I put them on for her.  The “twin jack-o-lantern” cakes were ready.

My oldest had so much fun she asked if we could make them again. There is a Halloween bake sale at her school next week so we plan to make a few to sell.  Leave the Jack-o-lantern face off for a great Thanksgiving dessert.

One of our favorite outings is to Color Me Mine.  My girls love picking their pottery and using as many colors as they can to paint it.  Our favorite to go is around Halloween.  The girls love going to the themed workshops.

Halloween with See’s Candies

My youngest doesn’t like chocolate with the exception of these chocolate marshmallow jack-o-lanterns. They are delicious but a little big so we cut them into 1/4’s and put the leftovers into a plastic bag for later.  Attach to a card or hand out to friends or family.  See allergen information at the end before giving to a child with nut allergies. I did not personally try these because my girls insisted the were only for them. They loved them and wanted to save them for their Halloween play date with friends! I thought it would be cute to color the sticks and add jack-o-lantern eyes and a mouth to the wrapper.

I get excited for fall because I love everything pumpkin spice. These truffles are rich, creamy, and full of my favorite pumpkin spice flavor. Great to include at a dessert table at a Halloween party or share a box with the host/hostess of a party you are attending. The pumpkin spice truffles are so delicious, I will be bringing a box to Thanksgiving as well! Sold in a box of 12!

Trick-or-Treat, Give Me Something COOL to Drink… (Cool Gear Halloween Giveaway)

Happy First Day of Autumn!  Although, we are sad summer is over, the crisp fall air is refreshing and it means time for pumpkin picking and Halloween.  My girls are anxiously awaiting Halloween!  They started planning their costumes over the summer and are already making plans with friends for Halloween night!

We recently received a Cool Gear Inc 14 oz Light Up Skull Mug and set of Glow Eyeball Ice Cubes.  My daughter opened it immediately and wanted to leave a “spooky” drink in the fridge for her dad when he came home from work.  We looked in the fridge and came up with “The Eye Socket” (below).  The mug features a flashing light that is turned on and off with a button on the bottom and the eyeballs glow once they are charged with light, adding extra festive fun perfect for night.

Our favorite berries are Driscoll’s

We have made this drink several times, and every time my girls enjoy it.  It makes about 2 servings.  They enjoy measuring and mixing the ingredients themselves.  They also love smashing the blueberries.  We plan on having a few friends over for pizza before trick-or-treating and will be serving this fun Halloween drink!  DSC_0994

Another Fall favorite is Apple Cider.  Our favorite apple cider is  from Red Jacket Orchards, found at Whole Foods.  I received a sample of SINFIRE Cinnamon Whiskey from Hood River Distillers not long ago, and decided it might be a good combination.  It sure was tasty.  A great drink to cozy up and relax with after the kids are in bed.  An easy drink to have at an adult Halloween party.  Serve it in this awesome mug and keep it cool with the eyeball ice cubes to “light-up” your night!

Trick-or-Treating Alternatives!

Happy Halloween!  We are very fortunate to have power, water, and recently cable and internet.  I kind of wish I was without cable and internet because the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy is heartbreaking.  So many people without power, many lost their homes and valuable possessions so how can we think about Halloween? My girls don’t understand why trick-or-treating has been cancelled.  To them it’s devastating.  Here are a few ideas to celebrate Halloween with your child, if you don’t have power try to do them while it is still daylight:

1. Halloween Hunt:  My husband had a great idea. He said that the girls should dress up in their costumes and we can hide treats throughout our living room and they can go for a hunt with their baskets.

2. Trick-or-Treat Role Play: Go to some or all the doors in your home.  Put a Bucket and sign outside of one door saying:”Happy Halloween: please take one piece of candy.”  Have each parent go behind a door so when the kids knock you can answer. On other doors you can put a sign saying “no trick or treaters allowed”.

3. Spooky stories:  Sit in the dark with candles, perfect if you don’t have power, and let your child(ren) come up with a “spooky” story.

There is always a later time to celebrate with friends and family!  Looking forward to celebrating next week! Thinking about everyone impacted by Hurricane Sandy!
