The Biggest Baby Shower

17 Nov

big City Moms collage

I remember the day I found out I was pregnant with my first.  It was an exciting time but as I got closer to my due date I started getting nervous.  Shopping was definitely fun but I had no idea what I was going to need or where to begin with my registry.  What do I NEED that will keep my baby safe, healthy, and will help her meet developmental milestones?  I was the first of my friends to get pregnant and I was new to New York so I was clueless about where to shop and what to shop for.

I recently attended The Big City Moms Biggest Baby Shower for the first time.  I wish I had known about this event when I was pregnant with my girls.  On November 13, new and expecting parents gathered at the Metropolitan Pavilion to learn about the latest baby gear, clothing, feeding and services available for a smooth transition to parenthood.  Various brands and representatives were available to educate parents on safety and choosing what’s right for you.  New and expecting parents had the best for baby (and parents) all in one room.  I have to say a lot has changed since my first pregnancy (5 1/2 years ago) and even my second (4 years ago).  I can’t believe how much is out there. Below you can find a little of what parents experienced and saw at the Biggest Baby Shower:

Get Strolling:

Choosing a stroller is challenging.  There are so many things to think about.  Had I known that I was going to have my second so soon, I would have opted for a stroller that could transform to a double and have a wheel board.  I also wish I had pushed a few around before.  Attendees were able to talk to various stroller brand experts to learn the latest features and give strollers a test drive to decide what best suites their new family.  Representatives from Orbit, Joovy, UppaBaby, Mama’s and Papas, Quinny, Britax, and Baby Jogger were in attendance.  So what’s new? Early next year you will be able to design your own stroller on Orbit.com.  A black frame and more fabric color choices will be available.  The Joovy TooQool is a new double stroller with a bumprider board that can be attached (love this stroller).  Also, new to Joovy is the Caboose VaryLight, in stores soon.

Time to Eat:

Mixie is an awesome bottle, making feeding on the go easier.  Two compartments separate the formula and water. When ready to feed your baby, push a button to dispense formula, then mix.

Liza from SageSpoonfuls was demonstrating how to make baby food with the SageSpoonfuls Immersion Blender and Food Processor.  Glass jars for storing baby food will be available soon!

A Fashionable Mom and Baby:

Lucky Brand was a favorite when I had my first.  At one point they stopped their baby and kid line.  I was happy to learn at the Biggest Baby Shower that baby and kid clothes are available online and in stores again.   You’ll also want to shop Ruum for your new baby.  The clothes are adorable!

TWELVElittle offers fashionable and functional diaper bags to help moms look great while carrying everything they need for their new baby.

Keep it Separate:

I’ve never like packing dirty clothes with clean clothes.  Especially, when my girls were infants and going through multiple outfits a day.  I would go through so many ziplock bags to keep the clothes separate.  Free Like Birdie offers green products to keep your clothes organized and separate without being wasteful.  Great for traveling or diaper bags.

In addition to shopping and testing out new products, new parents attended seminars (click for topics discussed and a list of speakers).

At the end of the night, parents left with an amazing gift bag stuffed with the products below.  Some also walked away with fabulous prizes!

Sweets for the Soul

6 Aug

I have to admit, I am not much of a dessert person.  Every once in a while I like something sweet but usually prefer eating something salty.  That was until recently when I received a sample of brownies and brownie “shots” from Sweets for the Soul, a LA based bakery. The name says it all. The  chocolate deliciousness of every bite keeps you wanting to go back for more. Unfortunately, my chocolate loving daughter couldn’t try because of her nut allergy, but that meant more for me.  I brought a variety to a dinner one night and they were gone in seconds.   I made sure to set two aside, as I knew they would be gone.  I was very upset when my husband snuck the last one.

The presentation, from each individual brownie to the packaging was beautiful.  Receiving them makes you feel good and will satisfy your sweet tooth.   Sweets for the Soul are the perfect gift to let someone know you are thinking about them.  Give as a get-well present, a gift to a new mom, a friend, a co-worker, a teacher or to your significant other.  Serve Sweets for the Soul at a bridal shower, baby shower, dinner party or holiday party.

Sweets for the Soul brownies are hand-made by founder, Lilly LaBonge, with a Valrhona chocolate, farmer’s market eggs, organic flour, organic spices and the purest of other ingredients. They are sold as a dozen, half-dozen or individually. Flavors we tried:

  • Salted Caramel Brownie Shot: My favorite, made of cocoa base w / fleur de sel laced caramel. The perfect combination of sweet and salty, I could eat an entire box.
  • Hotter Shots: Made of cayenne, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger and more.  If you like spicy, you will love this brownie shot.  It was a popular one among our friends.
  • Pure Chocolate Shot: Simple, but DELICIOUS! These shots are made of cocoa and almond flour base.
  • Peanut Butter Shots: Because of my daughters allergy, we snuck these in after bed time.  This brownie is made with organic peanut butter, topped with organic peanut brittle.  AMAZING!
  • The Obama: No matter what your political views are, this heart-shaped brownie is one you will definitely love.  Made with a cocoa base filled with dark and white chocolate chips.  A must!
  • Vegan:  Tastes like a regular brownie.  YUM! Made with organic flour, organic oil, vegan sugar, Valrhona cocoa and Valrhona dark chocolate chips.

Although Sweets for the Soul isn’t recommended for those with nut allergies, they have Gluten-Free, Soy-Free, and Vegan options available.  Click the links to for other items on the menu, shipping information, where to buy, the story behind Sweets for the Soul, and other FAQ’s!  Find Sweets for the Soul on twitter and Facebook!  Fingers crossed there will be a place to buy in NYC soon!  Until then, I will definitely be ordering more! Have a SWEET Day!

Living in NYC, I rely on public transportation.  I can’t even tell you the number of times I have had to carry one of my girls and lug a a stroller up a flight of stairs because the subway stop I needed to get off at didn’t have an elevator.  Like the subway, the bus is just as difficult to get on and off with a large stroller.  I recently learned about the newest stroller, the Yezz, from the well-known brand Quinny which seems ideal for all of those situations city moms and dads may experience.  The Yezz was featured on the Katie Couric show for her Big Baby Shower episode.  Yesterday parents braved the rain and lined up as early as 2.a.m at locations to receive one of 400 Yezz strollers that were given away at various locations around New York City which included Giggle, The New York Baby Show, and Albee Baby.

Features of the Yezz include:

  • Approximately 11 lbs
  • Ultra compact quick fold
  • Stands when folded, includes adjustable carry strap
  • Frame is made of IXEF® material, a high performance injection molded composite fiber — allows for the stroller to be light weight and extremely durable
  • Interchangeable seats to allow parents to change the fashion
  • Available Colors: Blue Loop, Yellow Move, Blue Track, Grey Road, Red Signal and Purple Rush.
  • For children from 6 months to 40lbs.
  • Available Accessories: WeatherShield
  • SRP $279; additional seats for $69

Butterscotch Blankees: Bundled Up With LOVE

6 Nov

When the girls and I walked out the door yesterday, we knew it was cold but didn’t realize just how cold. Today we were ready for the cold weather by wearing hats, scarves, and gloves. My oldest daughter has been looking forward to wearing her new Butterscotch Blankees hat and scarf we recently received and with winter weather creeping up on us I highly recommend them. The hat and scarf are beautifully made and very soft. My daughter usually complains about materials itching her and gets cranky but she has not complained once about the latest addition to her winter gear. I asked my daughter what she thought about her hat and scarf and she said they are cozy and comfy. She has worn them a handful of times since receiving them and many people have commented on her adorable hat and scarf (click links to see the different styles to choose from).  Hats and scarves come in two colors, the main color and the accent color with antique roman font (pictured below is the floating heart hat with ear flaps and floating heart scarf in lilac and fushia).  The hats come in acrylic or cashmere and are available in three sizes small, medium, and large. The scarves are 6″ x 40″ and only come in acrylic.  I chose to personalize ours with LOVE  instead of names so the girls could share, however, I LOVE them so much I plan on purchasing another set for my youngest daughter.

Butterscotch Blankees make great gifts for the holidays, birthdays, and baby showers, especially with the adorable packaging that looks like a piece of candy.  All products can be personalized to meet yours or your child’s taste.  In addition to the hat and scarves, Butterscotch Blankees, has personalized blankets, stroller blankets, pillowsdresses, and sweaters to keep your little one(s) comfy and cozy this winter.
