Afternoons in the Park #SummerFun

25 Jun

As soon as the warmer weather arrived, we started spending afternoons in the park.  As the days get longer and the school year comes to an end, I feel less pressure to rush home for bath and bed.  We occasionally pack a picnic dinner but always pack a bag of toys to keep us entertained for hours.  Some of our favorites for this summer include:

DSC_0734

Zing X6 Zoom Rocket ($24.99): The X6 is the first ever auto-rotating, multi-launching Zoom Rocket.  Load six soft-foam rackets onto the base and let your little one go.  The first time we took the X6 Rocket to the park, we had about twenty kids, boys and girls of all ages, lined up ready for a turn.  Rockets can take flight over a 100 feet, depending who gives the power.  The harder you stomp, the higher it flies.  Because my girls are little, it doesn’t go too high but they still have tons of fun.  They also have trouble getting it to go to the next rocket because they aren’t stepping hard enough. When their Dad takes a turn, you can hear their oo’s and aw aww’s as the rockets go one after the other in the air.  The X6 Zoom Rocket is perfect for keeping busy at the park or play dates.  It would make a great gift to give for upcoming birthdays, boy or girl.  The Zing Rocket is available at Target and Walmart.  Find other great products from bows to gliders by Zing Toys here.

zoom rocket

Hog Wild Atomic Shield Popper ($19.99): A foam ball-blaster with a gravity-fed auto load.  It comes with six foam balls that fire over 40 feet through the shield.  Pull the foam hammer back, aim, and release.   This took a little time for my girls because they are little and it requires a little more strength.  With a little help from me, they are able to watch their ball fly through the air.  With more practice, they hope to fire them on their own.  All of the older kids in the park, especially the boys, were drawn to it.  Buy multiple shield popper so the kids can play with each other, using the shield to protect themselves from incoming balls.  Other Hog Wild Inc products include: ZipStix, Soft and Squeezable Plush Poppers, and a Light Up Mustache (looks fun for when the sun goes down).

hog wild

Little Kids Fubbles Bubble Puppy ($3.00):  Fun for kids ages 2+.  The adorable puppy is used to blow bubbles.  The head of the puppy is  an ergonomically designed conical mouthpiece that intuitively guides young users to blow through the wide end – which both funnels air directly to the bubble wand and keeps bubbles away from the child’s mouth. Each Bubble Puppy comes with a “dog dish” dip tray and 1 fl oz of bubble solution. Available in three color styles: black & white, pink, and brown.  When your little one is done with the bubbles, they will have fun using their imagination while they play with the their puppy.

fubbles

Little Kids Bubble Guppies No-Spill Bublin’ Bucket ($7.99):  My girls love blowing bubbles for the younger kids at the park.   It comes with three wands, perfect for sharing with friends in the park, and a container of bubbles (additional sold seperately).  The best part is the no-spill feature on the bucket.  When you are in a rush to get out the door, you don’t have to worry about emptying it because it won’t spill all over your bag.  It’s also great because when my girls walk around they often lose so much of their bubble liquid.  With the bucket, you won’t have to worry about the trails of bubbles and constant refills.  Find a store the bucket is sold.

bubbles

Crayola Sidewalk Chalk ($5.00):  My girls love chalk.  They like to leave a message or draw a picture in the park for a friend to see.  When they are tired of drawing they play games like tic-tac-toe or hopscotch.  Available at Boomerang Toys.

21 Jun

After the snow melted from the last storm, my youngest turned to me and said “Mom, is it Summer?”  When I responded NO, she said “is tomorrow summer?”.  I again said no and everyday since she asks the same question.  It was a warm day yesterday and my daughter asked again “is it summer?”  I finally turned to her and said “when you wake up tomorrow, it’s officially summer!”

One of my favorite things about summer is spending afternoons by the pool and taking day trips to the beach.  Since becoming a mom, EVERYTHING is about my girls.  I wanted to share a giveaway with some of my summer favorites that you and your kids will love (almost) equally. Finding the Perfect Fit with Intimacy {bra fit stylists}

16 Jun

When I became a Mom, my body changed.  After breastfeeding both of my girls, bras no longer fit.  I can’t even remember the time I actually got measured and found a bra that fit comfortably and made me feel good.  Not long ago I joined Momtrends at Intimacy {Bra Fit Stylists}.  At the event, I was measured for a perfect fit in which I discovered that the bras I own are actually a few sizes off.  I tried on several styles.  Some with bright colors or beautiful lace details for special occasions as well as simple and more basic styles for everyday wear.  The bra fitting stylist helped me find the right style and fit for my body while providing the support I need.

photo 1-4

INTIMACY features lingerie from the world’s best brands, offering over 90 bra sizes from A to K cup.

Tips I learned during my experience:

  • The average woman’s breast shape and size change throughout her life.  Intimacy bra fit stylists recommend getting fit every six months.
  • When getting measured, start with the band.  Make sure it fits to the first hook so when it stretches you can keep tightening it to fit you.
  • Wearing your bra in the smallest part of your back provides the most support.
  • A bra stretches 2 inches in a lifetime.
  • With the purchase of an Intimacy bra, you receive 6 months complimentary alterations for any stretching that may occur.

In addition to beautiful lingerie, Intimacy has a wonderful collection swimwear for various body shapes and sizes.  After my bra fitting, my stylist brought several suits and helped guide me towards the suit best for my body.

At the end of the fitting, a profile was created listing my size and the styles and brands I tried on. I walked out with a gorgeous suit for the summer but plan to go back for the bras. Thank goodness for the profile, it will make finding the bras I liked  a lot easier.

Adventures to the LEGOLAND Discovery Center

13 Jun

DSC_0178

My girls look forward to the weekends.  It means a new adventure.  The other weekend we jumped in the car and headed to the LEGOLAND Discovery Center in Westchester, just outside of NYC. My girls LOVE building with their LEGO DUPLO and LEGO Friends sets so they were VERY excited to check out the Discovery Center.

Upon arriving, we picked up our tickets and were guided into the LEGO Factory.  The girls had a hands on experience making LEGO’s.

LEGOLAND

Next, you walk into a dark room which is the LEGO Kingdom Quest Laser Ride.  I think the girls would have enjoyed the ride but the darkness and the music scared them a little, so we quickly moved past this experience.  If your child gets scared easily, talk to them before your enter the room and talk about the ride (you use a laser to zap trolls and skeletons who are hiding).

After our quick pass through the  we visited our favorite NYC sights.  It’s amazing the time and craftsmanship that went to building these amazing models. It was beautiful.  The girls were in awe too.  A while back we attended a LEGO event, where my  girls met Master Model Builder Gary.  I was able to point out METLIFE stadium, a model he helped build.  The girls thought that was so cool.

LEGOLAND2

After you walk through the mini NYC replicas, you enter the main room with smaller sections.  You can start by putting together race cars and challenging your friends on the “race tracks”.  Little ones can head to DUPLO village for fun in a small play gym and ball pit.  My girls had a lot of fun over at the LEGO Friends house. They built their own creations, sang karaoke and played in the kitchen.  The favorite part of the day was their ride on Merlin’s Apprentice.  Unfortunately, my girls don’t do well with 3D so we skipped the 15 minute 4D LEGO Chima move experience and went to the giant play land in the center.  They had fun climbing and sliding.   In addition to all the great attractions, LEGO fans can learn to create models from Master Builders at the LEGO Master Builder Academy.  Be sure to check out what times the classes run.

legoland6

The LEGOLAND cafe was perfect for grabbing a drink and snack.  We ate before we left but if your little one hasn’t had lunch, a kids meal is available in a cool LEGO lunch box (pictured below).

DSC_0263

As you exit, you walk through a gift shop on the way out so be prepared to have your child pulling on your arm asking for something. So decide beforehand if you want them to get something or not.  There are items in a variety of price ranges so you could get something small or spend a lot on something large.

DSC_0264

Schools are letting out soon and finding activities to keep the kids busy can be challenging.  The LEGOLAND Discovery Center is a great outing on the hot summer days when you break from the heat.  It’s also a fun, rainy day adventure. Every Friday in June is Free Friend Friday, so grab a friend for lots of fun and building.

A Fun Father’s Day Adventure and @Safety_1st Car Seat #Giveaway

11 Jun

Father’s Day is quickly approaching.  I’ve tried to find a fun adventure for the entire family (grandpa’s included).  As I was talking with a friend, I remembered our trip to the Grand Prix New York Go Kart Raceway a few years ago for my husbands birthday.  We didn’t bring the kids with us because we didn’t know what to expect or if it was kid friendly. While I was there, I wish I had brought them so they could cheer on their dad as he raced.  There was a bouncy castle, arcade games, bowling and more for them to enjoy as well.  This is definitely on my list for a fun Father’s day adventure!

Celebrating National Strawberry Shortcake Day with a Party @driscollsberry #StrawShortcake

10 Jun

National Strawberry Shortcake Day is June 14th.  Did you know that the first ever shortcake recipe was printed in an english cookbook in 1588?  In the 1850’s Strawberries were added to the delicious shortcake.  Since then, there have been several variations of one of America’s favorite desserts with whipped cream added to the sweet treat in 1910.

Images from Driscolls

Images from Driscoll’s

Our refrigerator is always stocked with Driscoll’s Strawberries.  It was hard pass up the opportunity to celebrate National Strawberry Shortcake Day with Driscoll’s.  When I asked my 5-year-old daughter how we could celebrate, naturally she said “with a party”.   We started the planning process and decided to keep it simple and invite a few neighbors. We looked through recipes and looked at the history to find out which variation we wanted to make.  Growing up in the 1980’s, angel food cake with whipped cream and strawberries was very popular and the only version I remember having as a child.  I told her it was my favorite summer dessert and my brother had it at everyone of her birthdays.  She decided we should try my childhood favorite.

A few days before the party, we went to a friends bake sale.  My daughter saw ice cream cone cupcakes there.  She decided she wanted her strawberry shortcake in a cone. I suggested making cupcakes to in case some of the adults or kids didn’t want a cone. On the day of the party, we were about to fill our the cones and cupcake liners with angel food cake when she decided to add strawberries to the batter to “surprise” her friends.  Together we came up our own variation called Strawberry Shortcake Surprise, Any Way You Like (recipe below) in which guests could choose how they wanted their cake and what would go on it.

StrawberryShortcake

What you will need:

Ingredients:

  • Boxed Angel Food Cake or try this recipe on Driscoll’s
  • Package of Ice Cream Cones
  • 1 container Driscoll’s  Strawberries (available at Whole Foods)
  • 1 can Whipped Cream (We used Whole Foods 365)
  • Strawberry Ice Cream
  • “Surprise” Toppings: My girls favorites are strawberries, rainbow sprinkles, and Enjoy Life Chocolate Chips

StrawberryShortcake2

Directions:

  1. Lay aluminum foil over half of the cupcake pan.  Cut slits in the aluminum to place ice cream cone.  Line the remaining cupcake spots.
  2. Let your child(ren) help by slicing or chopping the strawberries using a Curious Chef Knife or mixing the Angel Food Cake ingredients together.
  3. Fill cupcakes and cones with cake batter and strawberries.  Bake for 12-15, times will vary so make sure to check occasionally.
  4. Clean up and set the table for the party.
  5. Place Ice Cream, Whipped Cream, Cupcakes, Ice Cream Cones, “Surprise” Toppings, Aladdin Mason cup(s) or bowels on the tables.
  6. Let your little guests get creative and create their very own Strawberry Shortcake Surprise. Strawberry ice cream was added too the cones, topped by whipped cream and delicious toppings while cupcakes were eaten with whipped cream and fresh strawberries or were placed in a mason and layered with with the ice cream, whipped cream, and other toppings.

StrawberryShortcake3

A party wouldn’t be complete without decorations and activities.  To let our neighbors know where the party was, my daughter made a sign on her boogie board and stuck it on the door.  When my girls hear Strawberry Short Cake, they think of their favorite show and the adorable characters.  We used our Strawberry Short Cake Berry Bitty Clubhouse on the table for decoration which the kids had fun playing with after.  The next activity was, pin the strawberry on the shortcake.  I printed a blank cake my daughter colored in.  Each child picked a Peaceable Kingdom Scratch and Sniff Strawberry Sticker and took their turn to get it on the cake.  It was a blast.

StrawberryShortcake4

The next variation of Strawberry Shortcake we make will be  Dorrie Greenspans Strawberry Mouse Shortcake (below).  Check out her story and connection to Strawberry Shortcake on Driscoll’s.

Shine In The Hamptons

5 Jun

The end of another school year will be here before you know it.  It’s time to start thinking about what camps you will be signing up for, if you haven’t already.   Shine NYC, one of my favorite children’s classes (read review) will have a pop-up summer camp in the Hampton’s this summer.  My girls have worked with Aaron and his staff in the past, at a class or birthday party. I’ve been impressed by their energy and enthusiasm for teaching.  My girls loved all the activities they have done with Shine. They continue to perform the Milk Experiment they learned in a class for friends who come to play and a Minnie Mouse picture frame they made at a birthday party continues to hang on their door.  I can only imagine the fun kids will have at camp this summer.  If you are heading to the Hampton’s you should definitely check out the camp.  Mention TASTEFULLY CHILDISH when signing up and you will receive 5 days for the price of 4. Sport comes with a red Happy Treat bone, is obsessed with chasing balls and loves to perform a wiggle trick!  He’s as close to real as you can get without the house training issues or chewing up your furniture and shoes. Perfect for the kids who want a dog but the parents aren’t ready for one.  Sport, also known as “Happy” because my oldest thought that was his name since she saw a tag with Happy’s attached to the bone.  When we received Happy, my oldest was so excited she wrote a book about her “new dog”.  Both of my girls treat him as he is real.  Every morning, my youngest wakes up and plays with Sport, I hear his cute barks and sounds coming from her room.  She puts out her imaginary food in the morning as well and will occasionally put him in his “crate”. At night, my girls take turns making a bed for him next to theirs. They are having a lot of fun with him!
