HAPPY HALLOWEEN! If you are looking for something to keep your kids busy today here are a few snacks they are sure to eat and a craft that they will love and will be a great addition to your halloween collection.
Monster Mouth Snack (mouth idea from Disney Family Fun Recipes: Apple Bites)
- Eyes: slices of banana with strawberry on top
- Mouth:
- Ingredients
-
- Apples
- Slivered almonds (both of my girls have nut allergies so we used corn chips instead)
- Instructions
-
- Just quarter and core an apple, cut a wedge from the skin side of each quarter, then press slivered almonds (or corn chips) in place for teeth.
- Tips:
- If you’re not going to serve them right away, baste the apples with orange juice to keep them from browning.
Since my daughter Maddie was able to eat solids, I have been making Mummies in a Blanket for lunch or dinner. This simple recipe will be a great way to get the kids involved in meal time. This year my girls will be wrapping their own Mummies.
Mummies in a Blanket (from Disney’s Family Fun Recipes)
- Ingredients
-
- 1 11-ounce can of refrigerator breadsticks (I used pillsbury)
- 1 12-pack of hot dogs (we used beef but you can use chicken or tofu depending on your dietary needs)
- Yellow mustard
- Instructions
-
- For each mummy, separate one breadstick from the roll and use kitchen shears or a knife to slice it in half lengthwise to create two thinner strips.
- Wrap one strip at a time snugly around the hot dog. Depending on the size of the hot dog, you may not need all of both strips. Leave about 1/2 inch of hot dog exposed for the face area and continue wrapping the top of the hot dog.
- Bake the mummies on a cookie sheet at 350º for 15 to 18 minutes or until the breadstick wrapping is golden brown.
- Remove the mummies from the oven and cool them for 5 minutes.
- Add yellow mustard eyes just before serving. Makes 12 mummies.
Last Minute Craft
If you haven’t had time to carve yet or if you have a plastic pumpkin sitting around, hand print ghosts are a great way to add a little character to your holiday decorations and your little ones will love to get a little messy,
Take a real pumpkin or plastic one (if you have one, I used a glittery pumpkin I found at Target and wanted to spice it up a little)
Use white paint, Stick your child’s hand (s) in and stamp them on. Use black paint to add the face (your child can do this too)
For a little more character your child can add their favorite halloween stickers to decorate the rest of the pumpkin, once the paint has dried (a little glue might be helpful if you want the stickers to stay)
My girls loved this project and it will be a great way to kill time before trick or treating.
**Children should always be supervised when doing activities and cooking projects.
